I am a graphic artist and printmaker, based in Galloway. Within my printmaking practice, I work primarily with local found and reclaimed timber. These are trees that have come down naturally. I have printed from trees found on the beach, that have been brought down in storms, and that friends have brought to the door step. Each type of wood creates a different print quality, and is unique in it’s aesthetic.
The print surface is created by sanding and burning the cross section of the wood which lowers the soft rings of spring growth, leaving the harder winter growth raised. Finding the graphic qualities in nature is a way of exploring rhythms, patterns and structures created by the organic forms. My print process draws on historic techniques, and also delves into the history of the wood itself, using each year of its development as part of my mark making.
